Our Urban Micro-Farm
A regeneration hub to benefit community for years to come.
Our hero composting site in Wellington is located on an old bowling green in Porirua that had been unused and dormant for 7 years. Our friends and now partners WELLfed were set up in the clubrooms doing amazing work nourishing the community (check them out), and together we began to build out a plan for the bowling green that would see it turned into a space that could greatly benefit the community and our environment.
In the first 12 months, this site alone has diverted 35,000 kg of food waste from landfill and composted thousands of Better Bottles. It has produced tonnes of nutrient-dense compost and used that to build the foundations of an organic micro-farm right in the centre of Porirua, Wellington.
It’s growing pumpkins, tomatoes, herbs, beans, potatoes, zucchini, strawberries, all sorts of greens, pollinator flowers and has a 29 tree orchard including lemons, limes, feijoas, and an avocado tree.
A new way forward.
The raddest thing about Porirua is that this is now a model that’s able to be replicated across New Zealand.
We have formulated a simple recipe that consists of food scraps, composters and a little bit of space to grow food (this could be a back yard, vege garden, even a roadside berm) it’s natural, it’s easy, it’s rewarding, it’s a solution to our ‘waste’ and it’s really, really enjoyable. Not only does the model replenish our soil and we are able to feed our surrounding neighbours which has created the most rewarding community.
By doing the work at this site we have learnt a lot, and we are on the quest to uncover more potential Edible Earth across NZ.
Watch this space.
Gardens in Progress
Whilst Porirua is flourishing away, we are always scouting new sites around New Zealand. Right now we are working on building another site in Wellington.
Your Edible Earth
Is there a piece of unused land in your community that you think has potential to be Edible Earth?
Think of your berm, think of your raised garden, think of the grass verge in the parking lot.
